“We’re looking for street smarts over book smarts.” Netflix has launched an official trailer for a spy comedy called The Union, one of their summer movie offerings debuting in August in a few months. This looks like another generic action comedy like so many Netflix has already made before (must be the algorithm telling them what to do, right? They have to be chasing this data!). Mark Wahlberg stars as Mike, a down-to-earth construction worker from Jersey, who is quickly thrust into the world of super spies and secret agents when his high school ex-girlfriend Roxanne recruits him on a high-stakes US intelligence mission. Isn’t this also similar to the recent “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” series, too? Though it also looks like Men in Black mashed up with Hit Man with a Mark Wahlberg script. The impressive ensemble cast also includes Halle Berry, Mike Colter, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Jessica De Gouw, Alice Lee, Jackie Earle Haley, and J.K. Simmons. Filming in 2022 took over the tiny, picturesque seaside village of Piran, Slovenia; it also shot in Jersey, London and other cities. This seems like it was (poorly) written by A.I. just for streaming audiences.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Julian Farino’s The Union, direct from Netflix’s YouTube:
Mike (Mark Wahlberg) is happy living a simple life as a construction worker in his native New Jersey – until his long-lost high school sweetheart, Roxanne (Halle Berry), shows up with more on her mind than romance. Knowing he’s the right man for the job, she recruits Mike on a dangerous intelligence mission in Europe that thrusts them back together into a world of spies and high-speed car chases, with sparks flying along the way. The Union is directed by British filmmaker Julian Farino, director of the films The Last Yellow and The Oranges previously, plus directing on many other TV series including work on “Giri/Haji”, “In Treatment”, and also Netflix’s “Florida Man” most recently. The screenplay is written by Joe Barton and David Guggenheim; from a story by first-time screenwriter David Guggenheim. It’s produced by Stephen Levinson, Mark Wahlberg, and Jeff G. Waxman. Netflix will release Farino’s The Union movie streaming on Netflix worldwide starting August 16th, 2024 coming up later this summer. Anyone want to watch this?
