“If you really care for her, then move on…” Meet Werther. Lionsgate has unveiled an official trailer for a fresh indie romantic comedy called Young Werther, which is the feature directorial debut of filmmaker José Avelino Gilles Corbett Lourenço. This Canadian production premiered at the 2024 Toronto Film Fest and earned some good buzz there. It’s already set for a December release on VOD in the US if anyone wants to hang out with Werther. The film is a clever contemporary adaptation of Goethe’s smash hit 1774 novel of tragic romance. Set in Toronto, Douglas Booth stars as Werther – a wealthy young man who instantly falls for a woman named Charlotte, co-starring Alison Pill. “He falls more in love with her as they spend time together. She’s introverted, loves to read, and has been the main caretaker of her siblings since the deaths of their parents. A small snag to their union, however, is that Charlotte is engaged to successful lawyer Albert.” It’s a tale of unrequited love, but can he win he heart anyway? The cast includes Iris Apatow, Patrick J. Adams, Amrit Kaur, and Jaouhar Ben Ayed. I’ve seen this one and it’s pretty good. Don’t write it off! It’s always nice to see something a bit different these days, and the terrific cast in here is the cherry on top.

Despite the urgings of his hypochondriac best friend, Werther turns his world upside down in a desperate, misguided and hilarious quest to win her heart. Young Werther is written and directed by the Canadian filmmaker José Avelino Gilles Corbett Lourenço, making his feature directorial debut after a few other short films previously. Based on the classic 1774 romance novel The Sorrows of Young Werther written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Produced by Matt Code and Wildling Pictures.
