“Rabbi – if anyone can do it, it will be her.” Sony Classics has released the official trailer for Between the Temples, an indie comedy from filmmaker Nathan Silver. This initially premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and it also played at the Berlin, Tribeca, and Provincetown Film Festivals as well. From filmmaker Nathan Silver comes a tale of a man lost in his own life, unsure of where to go or what to do next. A cantor (starring Jason Schwartzman) in a crisis of faith finds his world turned upside down when his grade school music teacher (co-starring the kooky Carol Kane) re-enters his life as his new adult Bat Mitzvah student. She is converting to Judaism and wants a quick Bat Mitzvah and he agrees to make it happen, while getting closer and closer to her in the process. The film also stars Dolly de Leon, Caroline Aaron, Robert Smigel, and Madeline Weinstein. Reviews describe the film as “a funny, irreverent, and occasionally surrealist depiction of Jewish processing of grief and personal crisis.” It’s good – worth a look.
Here’s the official trailer (+ two posters) for Nathan Silver’s Between the Temples, direct from YouTube:
Intro via Sundance: “A cantor in a crisis of faith finds his world turned upside down when his grade school music teacher reenters his life as his new adult bat mitzvah student. Between the Temples is a rare, offbeat comedy buoyed by its cast’s lively yet heartfelt performances. […] Jason Schwartzman and Carol Kane are a natural fit as our loving leads, while the rest of the film is peppered with a way-too-funny cast, including Triangle of Sadness standout Dolly de Leon and comedy writing legend Robert Smigel. They create a film that delights in frenzied misadventure while being carefully driven by a warm heart and loving embrace of human connection.” Between the Temples is directed by American indie filmmaker Nathan Silver, of the films The Blind, Exit Elena, Soft in the Head, Uncertain Terms, Stinking Heaven, Actor Martinez, Thirst Street, and The Great Pretender previously. The screenplay is written by Nathan Silver and C. Mason Wells. Produced by Tim Headington, Theresa Steele Page, Nate Kamiya, Adam Kersh, Taylor Hess. This initially premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Sony Pictures Classics will release Between the Temples in select US theaters starting on August 23rd, 2024 later this summer. Who wants to watch?
