Mabel Film Trailer

“Sometimes I feel like plants are more interesting than people.” “They are.” 🌱 Tribeca Films has debuted a charming official trailer for the film Mabel, an indie coming-of-age creation from filmmaker Nicholas Ma making his feature directorial debut. This originally premiered back in 2024 at the San Francisco Film Fest and has been waiting to be released ever since. Now coming out in limited theaters (NY and LA to start) this month. No one really gets Callie, an awkward pre-teen whose one and only friend, Mabel, is actually a plant. Her teacher, Ms. G introduces her to the controversial world of “plant intelligence” & desperate to impress, Callie builds a secret greenhouse in her backyard. As Callie’s obsession grows, she is put at odds with her mother and jeopardizes her first chance at a real friendship. This indie film stars Judy Greer, Christine Ko, Lexi Perkel, Quincy Dunn-Baker, and Lena Josephine Marano. This looks warm and welcoming and joyfully geeky. A wholesome little story about a plant loving girl finding her place – check it out below.

Biracial Callie (Lexi Perkel) loves trees & plants and little else in Nicholas Ma’s warm debut feature. Surly with her parents & intolerant of people who don’t share her interests, she’s also unhappy about changing middle schools after her family relocates. But as luck would have it, substitute teacher Ms. G (Judy Greer) is starting a botany unit in a high school science class, and Callie wangles her way in. Held rapt by Ms. G’s lectures & online speeches, Callie develops an experiment raising chrysanthemums in darkness and is able to lure Agnes, her ebullient younger neighbor, into working on the project. Precocious, determined, and wryly funny, Callie is a unique person who leverages her love of botany to propel herself into adolescence.

Mabel is directed by indie filmmaker Nicholas Ma, making his feature directorial debut with this project – he also went on to direct the documentary Leap of Faith the same year and a few other short films. The screenplay is by Nicholas Ma & Joy Goodwin. Produced by Ben Howe, Luca Borghese, and Helen Estabrook. This initially premiered at the 2024 San Francisco Film Festival a few years back. Tribeca Releasing debuts Nicholas Ma’s Mabel film in select US theaters starting April 17th, 2026 coming up soon. Want to watch?
