“Do you also live in profound sadness?” “No.” 1-2 Special has unveiled their official trailer for the terrific indie film titled Un Poeta, or A Poet in English, a Colombian film from filmmaker Simón Mesa Soto as his second feature. This first premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival earlier this year and it was one of my favorite films at that fest. It’s hilarious. A fading poet named Oscar finds purpose mentoring Yurlady, a talented teen, though exposing her to the poetry scene might be unwise. His own years of poetic pursuits led nowhere, leaving him a stereotypical obscure writer. “Aging and erratic, he has succumbed to the cliché of the poet in the shadows.” But that changes when he meets her… Starring Ubeimar Rios as Oscar, Rebeca Andrade as Yurlady, and Guillermo Cardona as Efrain. A kooky, funky, dark comedy about how our best intentions might not lead to the best results. And how sometimes pursuing art isn’t really the best path for everyone. Highly recommend adding this film to your watchlist – out in US theaters in January 2026 soon.
Here’s the official US trailer (+ poster) for Simón Mesa Soto’s dark comedy A Poet, direct from YouTube:

Middle-aged and erratic, Oscar is a failed writer who has given up on life. Unemployed and living with family, he wanders the streets of Medellín in a drunken stupor, lamenting the state of literature in his home country, where he has succumbed to the cliché of the tortured artist. However, the opportunity to mentor a young student offers a chance at redemption, if he doesn’t screw it up first. In a performance marked by darkly comic pathos, first-time actor Ubeimar Rios stars in Soto’s Un Certain Regard Jury Prize-winner A Poet, a raw and riotous farce about how good deeds are often met with the universe’s idea of cruel and unusually poetic punishment. A Poet, also known as Un Poeta originally in Spanish, is both written and directed by up-and-coming Colombian filmmaker Simón Mesa Soto, making his second film after directing Amparo previously, and a few other short films. Produced by Simón Mesa Soto, Manuel Ruiz Montealegre, & Juan Sarmiento G. This initially premiered at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival playing in the Un Certain Regard. 1-2 Special will debut Soto’s A Poet in select US theaters starting January 30th, 2026.
